Weekend with Eric, Evan and Remy

Watched Evan Almighty with Eric on Friday at The Cathay. It was quite an ad hoc thingy since we didn't really know what to watch, but of course that movie is one of those that we planned to watch. And it's damn funny LAH! Not as hilarious as Bruce Almighty however the plot this time is better, at least that's what I feel. lolx

Don't look at me! The flood is imminent!

Saturday was sleeping and gaming day for me, while Eric was at work. Went to fetch him after his work and had supper (dinner) at Liang Seah Street before heading for home to rest. He had a hard day at work with tired leggies and backies and handies, etc. =(

Today both of us woke up late till.... 1pm? Went to Ikea to get some stuff for a friend and grabbed some toiletries at Giant. Decided to have dinner at Tampines Mall, where there's this Express Teppan Yaki stall at the basement. I find the food there not bad, but Eric thought otherwise. I think he doesn't like the ingrdient the food was being cooked with. Haha. Overall was okay for me, except for the grumpy-looking chef. -.-"

Talking about chef, we just watched Ratatouille! How about something new huh? Chef rat to cook the best fine dining dishes in Paris, France? Human and rodents working hand in hand to save the reputation of a restaurant? Well, see the movie for yourself to find out more! lolx

“I want to go visit my son”

Having to work at the shop for almost a year, I’ve notice there is this petite lady aged about eighty that comes every Wednesday for about three months. “Boy, same thing hor.” Yup, I know what she means. Twenty dollars big, and twenty dollars small for all the three days. What puzzles me is that, this lady doesn’t seem to be working and yet she can spend money on these games like everyone else. Devotedly. One hundred and twenty dollars per week means four hundred and eighty dollars per month. Of course I’m no one to start question her capability to spend, but I’m just puzzled that’s all. Is she a millionaire? Does she have a lot of money in her CPF account?

Today is a cloudy Wednesday where it may rain anytime. However it never stops the old lady from visiting our shop. Having to see that no one is queuing behind her, I’ve decided to brave myself to ask her the “million dollar” question.

“Aunty, wah every time you buy so much for every week. Not siong meh?”

“Not too bad lah. My son sends me money every month. He works hard overseas you know.”

“Oh, then you should have save the money up.”

“No lah. I want to strike more money so that I can fly over to visit my son.”

The moment she ended her words, another middle-aged woman steps into the shop, pulls the old lady out of the shop. I can still hear them talking though. “Ma, can you stop buying all these with the money that Ah Soon sends to you? You need to take care of yourself you know?”

Then the middle-aged woman comes back into the shop, leaving her mum, I presume, outside. I swear that none of us made her tear, and she started to tell a story to us.

Never did the old lady know that, in actual fact, her son was killed in a car accident a year ago while traveling overseas to work. The middle-aged woman, who is the daughter-in-law, was requested by her husband to give a certain amount of money to his mother for her daily expenses and yet to hide the fact that he is already dead. We cannot do anything but to keep the secret as well, as the woman begs.

The poor petite lady will never know the truth.

Not your ordinary day after all

“Ah di, Toto System 7.”

“1234, two dollars big, two dollars small for Saturday and Sunday.”

“Give me two pieces of Big Sweep tickets.”

These are the words that I hear every now and then in front of my counter. More than often, my friends asked me why I have chosen this job. Ever since I’ve quitted from the Force, I had tried to source for other jobs that do not require me to run about, do not require me at work extra hours, and of course I do not have to start work early. Well of course, it’s still from one form of service oriented job to another.

Today is another ordinary day, a Wednesday to be exact. The usual queue starts from morning ten o’clock to lunch time, and as well as early evening where most people have knocked off from work. There he is again; I can almost recognize the smell from across the street. This frail looking old man, wearing a torn white singlet and blue shorts, never fails to come into the shop on Wednesday to peep at Aunty Mei who works together with me. Aunty Mei is disgusted by him, totally. “Aunty Mei, your admirer is here again leh! Haha!” I teased. And as usual, she gave me those looks as though she wants to slap me with the stack of fifty dollars notes in her hands. The old man is harmless in nature; in fact he does nothing but peeps from the corner of the shop and smile at Aunty Mei. Aunty Mei mentioned to me about the old man once, ever since she had worked here for eight years, the old man strolls around the neighborhood and comes into the shop in the same attire without fail. Hmmm, I wonder he ever baths.

Just when I thought that the old man is about to leave the shop, he turns back and starts to mumbled something. No, he is not talking to me. Instead, he is talking to Aunty Mei! Having to get prepared to rush out to the front counter to hold onto the old man, I get off from my seat and hold onto the door knob. At this moment, the words that come out of the old man’s mouth stun me. “Yun Mei, please come home with me, please.” Alright, this old man knows Aunty Mei. And for the first time, I know Aunty Mei’s full name; well not exactly the full name but at least more than what I have known before.

“Don’t come here and disturb me lah! Can you see that I’m working??” And for the first time, I heard Aunty Mei shouted. She couldn’t have shouted at anyone, no matter how rude the customers may be. Dismayed which I think the old man is feeling now, he turns his back on us and drags his slippers out of the shop. The dramatic scene lasted for ten minutes however the silence lasted until the end of the operation hours.

“He is my husband lah.”

“Oh ok.”

“What ok?? It’s not ok, ok?

“So why aren’t you staying with him?”

“Stupid gambler, every week ask money from me to buy 4D lah, Toto lah, soccer lah, buah beh lah.”

“Hmmm. So where are you staying now?”

“At my sister-in-law’s place lor.”

“Go home to stay with your husband lor.”

“Don’t want lah. Very contradicting right? Husband compulsive gambler, wife works at a place for gamblers.”

Aunty Mei’s husband never visits the shop from the next day onwards.
